You add friends on Venmo three ways: search their name, username, or phone number; scan their QR code; or pick them from synced contacts. Every add is one tap, with no approval step. One thing changed that most guides still get wrong: Venmo stopped adding your phone contacts as friends automatically back in 2022, so syncing contacts only makes people easier to find. How do you add friends on Venmo?
By search. Tap the search icon, type a name, @username, phone number, or email, open the person’s profile, and tap Add Friend. Done; there is no request for them to accept.
By QR code. Your personal code lives in the Me tab, on the QR button over your profile picture (the “Venmo me” view). To add someone standing next to you, tap Scan at the top of the screen, point the camera at their code, and their profile opens; tap Add Friend there. From synced contacts. Tap Pay/Request or Search, choose Sync your contacts, and allow access. Contacts on Venmo then show up as suggestions you can add one by one.
Does syncing contacts add friends automatically?
No, and this is the fact most older guides get wrong. Venmo’s official help center states it plainly: “Venmo has not automatically added your device contacts as friends since 2022. You’ll need to manually add any friends on Venmo, even if you have your contacts synced” (Venmo’s contacts article). Syncing improves suggestions and search, nothing more. To stop syncing, revoke Venmo’s contacts permission in your phone’s settings.
Where is your friends list?
Go to the Me tab and tap the friends tile under your profile picture (Venmo’s friends article). One note for 2026: Venmo is rolling out a redesigned app in phases through the year, so the exact placement may shift as the new Feed, Send, and Money surfaces reach your account; the Me-tab path is current as of August 2026.
How do you keep your friends list private?
Me tab → Settings gear (top right) → Privacy → Friends List, then choose public, friends-only, or private (Venmo’s privacy article). A separate toggle controls whether you appear in other users’ friends lists at all.
Payment privacy got stricter in 2026: with the app redesign, transaction visibility now defaults to “between friends” rather than public, and new users pick their privacy level at signup. What does adding friends actually change?
Less than you might think, and that is fine. You can pay or request from anyone on Venmo, friend or not. Friending just puts people at the top of your send list, so the right “John” appears first. Friends also populate your feed: their friends-visible transactions show up there, and since the 2026 redesign the feed supports reactions and Venmojis. How do friends work with Venmo Groups?
Groups is Venmo’s built-in expense splitter for trips, roommates, and events: members add expenses and Venmo splits them equally, with custom amounts available. Create one from the Me tab → Create a Group (Venmo’s Groups article). The friends tie-in: people already on your friends list are added to a group instantly, while non-friends must accept an invitation first, which makes this the one place friending removes a real step. Groups cap at 30 members.
How do you remove a friend on Venmo?
Open their profile from your friends list, tap Friends, then tap Unfriend. That is the entire process: no notification is sent, and they can still pay or request you unless you block them. Unfriending only cleans up your list; blocking cuts contact.
